WATERLOO -- With initial support from the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa, Ethnic Minorities of Burma Advocacy and Resource Center has begun operating in the Cedar Valley.
Refugee women from Burma will continue the tradition of backstrap weaving and spinning. Additionally, a growing group of refugee women from Burma are being taught how to knit by local knitters in Waterloo.
This has sparked a partnership with the Northeast Iowa Weavers and Spinners Guild to foster positive relationships between refugees from Burma and local weavers and spinners.
Startup supplies and support have been provided by the guild, the Universalist Unitarian Church and the American Association of University Women.
