SEPANG, April 25 (Bernama) -- Foreign Ministers of ASEAN countries began arriving here today to attend the 26th ASEAN Summit, which will kick off tomorrow.
Among those who arrived at the KL International Airport were Thailand's General Tanasak Patimapragorn, who is also the Deputy Prime Minister, U Wunna Maung Lwin (Myanmar) and Retno Marsudi (Indonesia) while Singapore's Foreign Minister, K Shanmugam arrived at the Skypark Subang.
Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary, Albert Del Rosario, Vietnam's Pham Binh Minh are also scheduled to arrive Saturday.
Yesterday saw the arrival of Cambodia's Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister, Hor Namhong and Laos' Foreign Minister Thongloun Sisoulith.
Brunei's Foreign and Trade Minister II, Dato Lim Jock Seng arrived on Thursday.
ASEAN Secretary-General, Le Luong Minh and European Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmstrom also arrived today.
This is Malmstrom's first visit to the region in conjunction with the ASEAN Summit chaired by Malaysia. She will participate in the 13th EU-ASEAN Economic Ministers Consultations, as well as hold bilateral talks with the Malaysian, Vietnamese, Singaporean, Indonesian and Filipino economic ministers.
The ASEAN Foreign Ministers will also attend a welcoming dinner where Deputy Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, is expected launch the Commemorative Coins in conjunction with Malaysia chairing the summit.
Tomorrow the ministers will sit down and discuss issues, especially on the realisation of the ASEAN Community (AC) and other related issues at the ASEAN Foreign Minister's Meeting (AMM).
The two-day Summit starting tomorrow will focus among others on the progress made towards establishing the ASEAN Community by end-2015 and chart the next course of action to propel the regional grouping to greater heights.
Established on Aug 8, 1967, ASEAN groups Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam.
