NE outfits form common platform, Khaplang at helm




Guwahati: The anti-talks faction of Ulfa, National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang), National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Songbijit) and Meitei outfits of Manipur have formed a common platform of several militant outfits of the region in Myanmar, posing a fresh threat to Assam Police. NSCN (K) chairman SS Khaplang is the chairman of this new platform named United Liberation Front of West South East Asia. Khaplang had recently pulled out of the ceasefire agreement with the Centre.

"We received information about formation of this new platform with Khaplang as its chairman three days ago," additional director general (special branch) of Assam Police Pallab Bhattacharya told TOI. "We are taking it seriously since it involves bringing several militant outfits under one umbrella. In fact, Paresh Baruah and others have been making efforts to form a new platform since 2011," the ADGP said.

Ulfa (Independent), NDFB(S) and the other outfits, who are demanding secession, have been using the term Western South East Asia (WSEA) to describe the NE region in place of Northeast India.
