Nine Burmese dead in Thai truck tragedy

Nine Burmese migrants were killed when a truck carrying them crashed near Bangkok in Thailand on Monday, according to a migrant rights group.

Director of the Myanmar Association in Thailand Kyaw Thaung told DVB that the truck crashed while it was carrying 21 Burmese migrant workers in Samut Sakhon Province. Kyaw Thaung reported that the crash was due to negligence by the driver, also a Burmese national, who has been arrested.

Of the nine deceased, eight died at the site of the accident, while one died from injuries in hospital. The 12 other individuals on the truck were also hospitalised.

"Eight were killed on the spot and another died at the hospital. As of now, four of those injured remain in the intensive care," said Kyaw Thaung.

"The truck was carrying the migrants on their way home from work. It slammed into a wall due to negligent driving at around eight or nine in the evening, killing the victims upon impact. The driver himself is fine as he was wearing a seatbelt," said Kyaw Thaung.
