No service for DAP MP at cafe chain

GEORGE TOWN: A cafe franchise in Burma Road has declared Tanjong MP Ng Wei Aik a persona non grata over his refusal to pay the 10% service charge at the outlet.

A cafe spokesman, who declined to be named, said the DAP politician was not banned but would no longer be welcomed.

He, however, denied putting up a notice or a "crossed-out" photo of Ng at the cafe entrance such as the one making the rounds on social media.

A check by The Star showed no such photo at the outlet yesterday.

The photo, which also said that Ng would no longer be served at the outlet, was supposedly pasted at the entrance.

On Saturday, Ng had refused to pay the RM7 service charge after treating reporters to drinks and food at the outlet where he earlier held a press conference.

After the supervisor issued him a new receipt without the service charge, Ng told another customer that she, too, had the right to accept or refuse to pay the sum.

The customer then told the supervisor that she would not be paying the charge.

Both Ng and the management of the franchise head office in Ipoh could not be reached for comment.

It was recently announced that outlets could not impose the service charge unless they had employer-employee collective agreements in place because part of the sum collected went to the staff.

This is not the first time that Ng has kicked up a fuss over payment of a fee or charge: he refused to pay a RM10 parking fee in January because a parking machine sign showed that only RM5 would be charged.

However, attendants told him that basement parking rates were different and pointed to another sign for the RM10 charge for the level where Ng had parked his car.
