Tens of thousands of people joined the 8888 popular uprisings
remembrance in Yangon, the first in decades to receive the official
approval by the government.
Organizers said about 20,000 visitors thronged into the most
significant political occasion in Myanmar Convention Centre in Yangon
in the time of the new quasi-civilian government.
Remembrances were held in various parts of the country as well.
A group of young people held a vigil in front of the city hall of
Yangon Thursday morning to pay tribute to the student activists killed
in the largest rally against then military junta on the same day 25
years ago.
The 8888 silver jubilee was attended by Nobel laureate Myanmar
parliamentarian Aung San Suu Kyi and many political figures.
Top government officials including president office minister Aung Min
and presidential advisor Myint attended the three-day conferences
Tuesday and Wednesday.
Exhibition booths were kept open in the compound of the hall to
display the historic news photo of the uprisings and paintings
portraying the uprisings.
In a report by local newspaper Mizzima, a Buddhists monk set ablaze to
himself in a venue to hold the remembrance in the central Myanmar town
Monywa Thursday morning. It is not known whether the case is related
to the remembrance or not.
The event also gained apparent attention from the media.
