Major shareholders of the leading newspaper Myanmar Times applied at the court for the dissolution of the company after months of controversy with Australian founder and shareholder Ross Dunkley, according to an Irrawaddy report.
Myanmar Consolidated Media (MCM) was founded in 2000 by U Sunny Shwe and Dunkley and has been producing Myanmar Times in both Myanmar and English versions and a number other periodicals.
Its shares were later acquired by local media mogul Dr Tin Tun Oo with the financial backing of the military regime.
Dr Tin Aung Oo contested in the 2010 general elections but failed to impress the voters.
The controversy has been circling the leading newspaper since 2005 when Dr Tin Tun Oo, owner of Swesone Media Group, entered into negotiations with Dunkley over the purchase of the remaining stakes.
