MMPO to limit broadcast rights of local films on satellite channel

Myanmar Motion Picture Association has announced their plan to limit the broadcasting rights of local films and videos on Myanmar International Channel, a local English-language satellite channel, due to significant drop in sales of foreign distribution rights.
"The video market already has its own foreign distribution market. Most of the buyers are from Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, and Japan. The sale of foreign distribution rights have dropped down significantly this year. There could be many reasons for this but one of the reasons is Myanmar International Channel," said Win Kyi, secretary of Myanmar Motion Picture Association said during a meeting with its members.
"We will negotiate with the channel for broadcast rights. Some of the recently released films have been aired on TV so we will prevent the sales of broadcast rights for such kind of films," he added.
MMPO earlier announced their plan to negotiate with television broadcasters in setting up a time frame for airing local films after newly released films have been aired on cable channels.
Film stars and directors have also objected to the sales of broadcasting rights by film producers to cable television channels because their contracts did not include broadcasting rights.
