Speaker Thura Shwe Mann of Union Assembly called for constitutional amendments to introduce a federal system at a seminar for protecting the rights of ethnic minorities held in Nay Pyi Taw on August 6.
The seminar was aimed at discussing the rights of ethnic minorities.
"I presented the rights of ethnic minorities prescribed in the constitution. If these rights are not enough for ethnic minorities, the Union Assembly is responsible for fulfilling the desire of the ethnic minorities," Speaker Shwe Mann said.
The seminar focused on complete and partial amendment to the 2008 Constitution. The partial amendment is more likely to be made rather than a complete amendment.
It was attended by Speaker Shwe Mann of Union Assembly, Upper House Speaker Khin Aung Myint, ministers, MPs from the Union Assembly and officials of the Union Attorney-General Office.
"According to the Constitution, the appropriate rights should be given to the ethnic minorities. If the provisions are left to be provided to Regions and States, these are also to be fulfilled," Shwe Mann said.
The main aim of the seminar was to fully view the provisions offered by the constitution to different regions and states. If the provisions are not enough for introducing federal system, amendments will be made to the constitution to be able to meet the principles of federal system, Shwe Mann added.
