Dimapur District Welfare Trade Union (DDWTU) has slammed the Dimapur fire department for its "lack of preparedness, unprofessionalism and their trademark slow response" to emergency situation.
In a press release, DDGWTU president Hukavi Murru said the fire department was immediately informed about the fire that broke out in Burma camp on Saturday night at around 9.30 p.m. He said fire tenders arrived much later. And when it arrived there was no water in the tank to douse the fire which ultimately consumed two lives and destroyed properties worth lakhs of rupees, he added.
DDGWTU said after several minutes, the inferno subsided and a contingent of fire fighters arrived only to douse the already dying flames. The union said if the fire-fighters were fully prepared, the two lives would have been rescued and the damage could have been minimized.
DDGWTU has demanded the fire to department to own moral responsibility over the issue and provide full assistance in cash or kind to the family members of the victims and the garage owners.
