Imphal, December 15 2013:
Chief of Myanmar Army, General Soe Win along with his subordinate officers visited Imphal today, during his various whirlwind India tour legs.

General Win's short and 'unnoticed' visit came after Myanmar Government assured to drive out North East India's rebels camping in the country from its soil.

He is the deputy commander-in-chief, defence services and Myanmar army commander-in-chief.

There is however no official confirmation about the purpose of his visit.

When The Sangai Express contacted the Army PRO, Lt Ajay Kumar Sharma, the officer said that he has not been briefed on the visit of the Myanmar Army chief.

A source said that the General visited the army's Leimakhong garrison near Imphal on his return journey after attending a passing out parade at Officers' Training Academy (OTA) in Gaya on Saturday.

Leimakhong unit is commanded by a Major General, who supervises troops deployed in half of Manipur's security bound areas.

During his whistle-stop visit at Leimakhong, Gen Win witnessed a military demonstration displayed by the Indian troops and had a meeting with senior officers before leaving for counter-insurgency and jungle warfare school at Vairangte in Mizoram from where he left for his country in the afternoon, added the source.

The agendas of the meeting could be related to cross border movements of insurgents, flow of arms through the porous Indo-Myanmar boundary and the controversial border fencing along Manipur's Moreh sector, the source speculated.

Manipur alone shares more than 300 -Km border with Myanmar.

Before coming to Imphal , the general , accompanied by his wife and six officers also visited the headquarters of the army's 3 Corps headquarters headed by a Lieutenant General at Rangapahar in Nagaland.
