DIGICEL IN DEAL WITH OOREDOO

Digicel, a company which showed convincing commitment in Myanmar's telecom auction but failed to impress the assessment committee, has signed deal with the successful bidder Qatar-based Ooredoo for mobile network, according to the Irish Times report.

Denis O'Brien's Digicel teamed up with local tycoon Serge Pun's Yoma to form Digicel Asian Holdings to bid for the most coveted telecom licenses made available to international firms.

Billionaire philanthrophist George Soros also joined the consortium and was the favourite along the round of bid.

Digicel's subsidiary Myanmar Tower Holdings will establish a network of mobile masts in Myanmar which will be "all telecommunications operating companies" in the country.

Another telecom license opened to international firms went to Telenor of Norway.

Telenor and Ooredoo are recruiting staff and starting their missions in Myanmar as they seek to provide services as from earlier 2014.
