Manipur delegation in Delhi to take up border fencing issue with Centre

A high level political delegation led by chief minister O Ibobi Singh Sunday left Imphal for New Delhi to take up the contentious fencing at the Manipur sector of the Indo-Myanmar border to level of Prime Minister and other concerned ministries.

Talking to reporters, before leaving, deputy chief minister Gaikhangam, who is also part of the delegation stressed on the urgent need for drawing Centre's attention in rectifying the ongoing process of border fencing, maintaining that the border pillar disputes should be settled first.

He said that the delegation led by chief minister was heading for Delhi to apprise the central leaders including the prime minister, Union home minister, Union external affairs minister and other concerned leaders with regard to the border fencing.

Placing the ball of border fencing in the court of the Centre, Gaikhangam contended that the fact finding team of the political parties will leave no stone unturned to press the Centre to halt the ongoing border fencing until a final settlement to the disputed border pillars between India and Myanmar was settled.

The 22-member delegation of political parties excluding representatives of the Manipur People's Party (MPP) and BJP led by the chief minister left Imphal for New Delhi Sunday.

It may be mentioned here that while people of the state and civil organizations were alleging of leaving a large portion of Manipur's land on Myanmar side by the border fencing being taken up by the BRTF under the Union ministry of home affairs, Myanmar government has allegedly opened an outpost of its army near the Holenpai village, a Manipur village near the disputed border pillar no. 23 of Indo-Myanmar border.

Myanmar army has set up around three bunkers and temporary fencing of logs near Holanphai village. However, there were no bunkers or any military establishment in sight from the side of Indian army except for guarding the area during day time.
