MYANMAR GRANTS PARDON TO GET ZERO POLITICAL PRISONER

Myanmar President granted a pardon to political prisoners and the accused charged with suppressive legislations on December 31, according to the state media.

The president's order not only released the prisoners but also dropped politically motivated charges against activists and closed the ongoing investigations.

The pardon was granted to the convicted and the prosecuted persons under Unlawful Association Act, Treason, Sedition, the Law to Safeguard the State from the Danger of Subversive Elements, Peaceful Gathering and Peaceful Procession Law and Emergency.

All the legislations were used by the regime as tools to suppress the opposition for decades.

"All ongoing investigations shall be closed without further investigation," said the order.

The pardon shall affect all the cases on and before December 31.

The President earlier promised the release of all the remaining political prisoners and issued a series of amnesty orders.

But the move was backfired with the criticisms against arrest and prosecution of activists under peaceful procession law.
