'MMR remains an issue' in Myanmar

A new report from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has revealed that the maternal mortality rate (MMR) in Myanmar is still a significant issue for the republic.

The rate currently stands at 200 deaths in 100,000 live births. Entitled Motherhood in Childhood, the study cites teenage pregnancies, low use of contraceptives and a lack of healthcare provision as reasons for the figure, which is one of the worst in the region of south-east Asia.

However, this does represent a 50 per cent reduction since 1990, when the UN introduced its Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

According to the targets set by the organisation's MDG 5, Myanmar must further reduce the MMR to 130 by 2015. This would represent a 75 per cent decrease in line with the worldwide objectives set by the UN.

Burma Medical Association programme director Saw Nay Htoo explained to IRN News that family planning must become more of a priority.

He said: "If they have a big family, they will have less income and struggle to provide for their children."
