Myanmar motion pictures halt DVD releases

The Myanmar Motion Picture Organisation has restricted the production of new DVD films this year as they wait for cinemas to screen productions that have been years in waiting.
Aye Kyu Lay, vice chairman of Myanmar Motion Picture Organisation, has said that screening films on DVD used to be an alternative when there were less productions to compete for the limited number of cinemas.
"These DVD [films] were allowed in the past as when there were lesser film productions. Now, the number of film production has increased and they are being filmed with digital system so we no longer need a DVD system at the cinemas," said Aye Kyu Lay.
"After all these films have been produced, there won't be any DVD films left. At this time, there may be changes in the system for screening films," he added.
Myanmar has less than 65 cinemas but some of them have been torn down and rebuilt as shopping malls and condominiums. DVD releases used to attract larger audiences in the past but this has reduced after 2010.
Cinemas in Yangon's downtown area usually attract larger audiences due to their location but often these cinemas only have one projector so many productions have to wait years before their films are screened.
