Myanmar President Thein Sein revealed his support for the constitutional reform which would open the Nobel Laureate Democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi's road to President in his monthly radio message.

"I would not want restrictions being imposed on the right of any citizen to become the leader of the country," the president said in a monthly address to the nation.

He also said the constitutional reform would bring about the national reconciliation to the nation which is still struggling with decades-long civil wars.

"At the same time, we will need to have all necessary measures in place in order to defend our national interests and sovereignty," said the reformist president.

Myanmar's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who is also the chair of the largest opposition the National League for Democracy, has revealed her wish to become the next president of the country.

She is barred from being elected as the president as her sons are British citizens.

The constitution was drafted by the former military regime and was approved in the controversial referendum.
