Myanmar is targeting the fall of the nationwide poverty rate in the Southeast Asian country from current 25.6 percent to 16 percent in 2015-2016 fiscal year, according to a regional official of government agency, reported Mizzima.
Mya Mya San, head of Mandalay Region Planning and Statistics Department, revealed the government's commitment at a seminar on the city's development in Mandalay, the second largest city of Myanmar.
Chin State in isolated northernmost part of the country has the highest poverty rate with 73.3 percent while Mandalay Region as a whole has the poverty rate of 26.6 percent.
The government will compile baseline data on economic, social and living standards of the people living under poverty line, according to a report by the region office of Planning and Statistics Department.
The short-term poverty alleviation scheme initiated by the government will end in 2015-2016 fiscal year.
Recently, the reformist president Thein Sein has spoken out that the poverty alleviation is the top agenda for his government for its remaining 26 months in office.
