Myanmar Ministry of Rail Transportation is expected to invite tenders for major refurbishments of the country's oldest Yangon Railway Station, according to a report by Eleven Media Group.

The government has already approved the tender invitation and the Japanese government has pledged assistances for upgrading the railway station.

"As we make it available to international firms, we will systematically invite tenders. And we have requested assistance from Japan," according to an official of the Ministry of Rail Transport.

Two companies each from Singapore and Japan and a local company has submitted proposals for the upgrading of the railway station since 2012.

The tender plan will be finalized in January 2014, according to the official.

The upgrading could include housings, public spaces and other facilities in the station yard.

Myanmar is in cooperation with Japan for upgrading of major railroad networks of the country.
