EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht has launched negotiations for
investment protection agreement between Myanmar and EU with Myanmar's
national planning and economic development Kan Zaw, according to a
statement by European Commission.

The EU Member States gave their green light on the negotiation mandate
earlier this week in Brussels, on 18 March 2014, according to the
press release.

The agreement will promote protection and fair treatment of investors
from both sides, says the statement.

"This investment agreement could become an important accelerator for
the reform process in Myanmar/Burma", EU Trade Commissioner De Gucht
said.

According to official figures of Myanmar government, EU made 9 percent
of foreign direct investments in Myanmar in 2013.
