Anti-trafficking squad seeks regional cooperation

Human traffickers may be profiteering in countries that have not signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the government, according to the Myanmar Anti-Trafficking Squad.

While the Myanmar government has MoUs with neighbouring China and Thailand, making it easy for law enforcement agencies to cooperate over cases of human trafficking, no such agreements exist with Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore.

"Immigrants from our country are being racketeered in China, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore. We only have MoU with China and Thailand.

In order to save the victims in the countries with no MoU, we can only process between embassies. After anti-human trafficking project implemented in the ASEAN region, I think we can give full protection to immigrants and victims of trafficking," said Deputy Col Khin Maung Hla from the Myanmar Anti-Trafficking Squad.

The Anti-Trafficking Squad reported the rescue of 30 victims who had been taken to Thailand in 2013. There are a number of cases still pending in China. Many social organisations report cases of human trafficking are still occuring.

The ASEAN-backed anti-human trafficking draft project will be amended in Myanmar. The project aims to rescue victims of trafficking and to fully protect the workers' rights across the region.

There were 102 trafficking cases last year. Many of the victims were women who had been sold as brides to Chinese husbands.
