Ruined U Pein Bridge being repaired on April 1

The famous U Pein Bridge in Mandalay is undergoing maintenance works, according to the Department of Archeology, Museums and Library.

The 160-year-old bridge is one of the country's most stunning landmarks. It is the longest teak bridge in the world but has been in a state of disrepair for years.

"We are maintaining U Pein Bridge. As of March 18, decaying bridge floors, beams and pillars are being supplanted by wood. Brick and concrete will not be used for repair. Teak wood will be used for the bridge pillar that should be replaced," said an official from the Department.

Located in an ancient culture zone, the Mandalay Region Government is spending Ks 13 million on repairs and is attempting to complete the job before the Thingyan festival to celebrate Myanmar's new year.

The 3,967-foot long bridge has survived numerous natural disasters but has many rotting pillars and broken beams due to age and over use.

Another problem is the excessive littering in the lake below which Mandalay City Development Committee has vowed to clean up.
