At Shwedagon Pagoda, flowers, water and lights were offered to Buddha from dawn while the site's board of trustees released birds and fish.
The 23rd blood donation ceremony was held at an ordination hall at Shwedagon and monks led prayers.
"I have to pay homage at Shwedagon Pagoda with my family, including my grandchildren. I keep the precepts. My grandchildren enjoyed the feast given in charity. I wish everyone will be happy and healthy in the new year," said Kyin Htwe of Tamwe Township.
The pilgrims released birds and fish into Thwaysay Lake at the northern corner of Shwedagon Pagoda.
Youth organisations provided food, drink and medicine to devotees at the pagoda.
Botataung Pagoda was also crowded with pilgrims and foreigners who released birds, fish and fed turtles.
"There are various kinds of fish being released. The price depends on the breed," said a man who sells live fish at Botataung.
"My friends and I have donated soft drinks for the devotees for the last three years," said volunteer Zeyar at the pagoda.
Parks, including Kandawgyi, and cinemas were crowded with revellers.
"This year, we donated food and clothes to needy people in Hlaing Township," said Ein Dray Khin.
