President warns officials to avoid dishonesty and corruption

President Thein Sein has strongly advised all government officials to avoid dishonesty and corruption in a public speech delivered on Wednesday.

The President made the speech at a swearing in ceremony of the newly appointed deputy minister and vice-governor of the Central Bank in Nay Pyi Taw.

"One may make mistakes in discharging his or her duties. Mistakes that happen in spite of good intention will be corrected, but I'd like to warn [all of you] to keep personal character and integrity, and to avoid dishonesty and corruption," President Thein Sein said in his speech.

The public speech was aired across the country on state-owned radio and TV channels.
"The people want our country to be peaceful and to have the rule of law. They also want socio-economic development. As our government was elected by the people so our aim is to fulfil the people's wishes," said the President.

President Thein Sein also reviewed the performance of his government over the past 30 months. He said some government departments and regional administrations had shown weaknesses in reform efforts, transparency and accountability. Those corrupt officials including some ministers, deputy ministers and director generals have been punished," he added.

In the next 30 months of his government, Thein Sein said it will be focus more on issues such as improving water supply and electricity, transportation, employment and development of the socio-economic life of people.

The President called on the whole government to be united and work together towards those goals.
