UNDP to conduct survey on HIV-infected people in Myanmar

UNDP to conduct survey on HIV-infected people in Myanmar

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) says it will conduct a nation-wide survey on the social and economic impact of HIV/AIDS in Myanmar by mid-October.

The survey will be the first of its kind to study the impacts of HIV starting at the household level. Families living with HIV encounter many socio-economical burdens, according to assessments made by UNDP in 2012.

"This survey will possibly promote public awareness more about HIV/AIDS in the country and may support national plans on AIDS. People usually do not have enough understanding about HIV-infected people and do not know what effects will be upon their responses to the HIV-infected people," said program analyst Maung Maung Kyaw.

UNDP will cooperate with Myanmar's ministry of health as well as other local and international NGOs for the survey. The study will look into the impacts of HIV on employment, income, education, migration, access to information, medical treatment and look how these areas affect the health of the HIV-infected people in Myanmar.
