Auckland Zoo's only elephant will finally be getting a companion to replace the late Kashin.
It is a gift from Sri Lanka.
Director Jonathan Wilcken says it is the culmination of a lot of work the zoo has done in Sri Lanka.
Burma is the zoo's only elephant, and is too old for breeding.
"Really, we've been working to begin to build an elephant family around her.
"We start off with younger girls so that she can be a matriarch to the younger elephants who would then go on to breed."
Jonathan Wilcken says the animal is coming from a Sri Lankan elephant orphanage.
It's not clear when she will arrive as the process of bringing a large animal into the country can take a long time.http://www.information.myanmaronlinecentre.com/a-new-buddy-for-burma-the-elephant-2/
