Centre urged to settle Manipur border issue
SOBHAPATI SAMOM
IMPHAL, Dec 28 – An all political party meeting here on Saturday urged the Government of India to settle the issue of nine unsettled border pillars along the Manipur sector of the Indo-Myanmar border immediately by holding talks with the Myanmar authorities.

This was resolved in an hour-long all political party meeting in Imphal on Saturday which was chaired by Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh.

"The Government of India shall also be requested to conduct a joint re-survey in consultation with the Myanmar authorities to settle the border between border pillars 86 to 88, as some of the Indian villages including Maring village have fallen in the territory of Myanmar after the recent survey", the meeting resolved.

The Government of India shall also requested to maintain status-quo in respect of the border fencing and ensure that no Indian territory is compromised in the process of border fencing, it further resolved.

The meeting which was attended by representatives of 14 political parties, representatives of the Surveyor General of India and Border Roads Task Force have also resolved that the State Government shall forward the resolution to the Prime Minister, Minister of External Affairs and Minister for Home Affairs for early settlement of the border issues.

A controversy had arisen out of the border fencing at Manipur's border town of Moreh. The newly formed Committee on Protection of Land on Border Fencing (CPLBF) had even called a 12 hour bandh in connection with the border issue on October 7. The CPLBF alleged that the ongoing border fencing along the Manipur border will affect around 20,000 people in 43 border villages if the authority failed to re-survey the border pillars.
