Officials of the Surveyor General of India Saturday produced relevant records of border between Manipur and Myanmar in an effort to find out the truth regarding the imbroglio of the border fencing particularly about the border pillars which had been a bone of contention between Manipur and Myanmar.
A three-member official team of the Surveyor General of India arrived here Friday in a bid to ease the existing imbroglio over the missing of boundary pillars and tension arising out it at the Manipur sector of the Indo-Myanmar border.
An official source said that after examination of the border pillars and report of the
Surveyor General of India team, steps will be taken to initiate a joint survey by the two countries.
The team headed survey officer KK Das Shankar include Biraj Kalita and Ajit Pohawal of the Surveyor General of India today met with representatives of political parties at conference hall of the chief minister's secretariat.
The meeting chaired by chief minister O Ibobi Singh thoroughly deliberated the issues at the international border arising out of fencing being erected on the Indian side and Myanmar's intervention in the construction of an integrated check post (ICP) at Moreh town with a claim that the area where the ICP is being constructing belongs to Myanmar.
Officials of the Surveyor General of India reportedly showed the real position of the border pillars with the help of maps and the missing pillars to be identified according to the records in a bid to garner goodwill with the state of Manipur so that there were no misconceptions when border fencing works between the two countries are taken up.
The team is likely to proceed to Moreh for on spot inspection of the border along with representatives of the political parties. As in earlier case, Manipur People's Party (MPP) and BJP stayed away from attending the meeting.
Tension was brewing up at the Indo-Myanmar border at Moreh sector after authority of Myanmar asked its counterpart Indian authority at Moreh to stop the construction work of ICP at Moreh, near border gate no. 2 claiming the portion of land belongs to the Myanmar.
The tension heightened after a protest rally of people marched on the streets of Myanmar's Tamu district border on December 24 as security force of both the countries guarding the border have been put on high alert.
The official team of the Surveyor General of India is here in response to a request of representatives of all political parties of the state to immediate settlement the border dispute by carrying out a joint survey so as to maintain the good relations between the two countries.
Centre has also assured of settling the dispute through diplomatic dialogue between the two neighbouring countries.
