Myanmar and Bangladesh have begun to establish a water link between
the two neighbouring countries, according to a press release by the
Bangladeshi trade department.

Mahbub Ahmed, the trade minister of Bangladesh, said on January 19
that the water transport between the two countries would be launched
in March 2014.

The plan which had been initiated last year was suspended due to
sectarian violence in western Rakhine State.

The cargo ships will run from coast to coast, to boost the trade
between the two countries.

There have been vessels carrying rice from Myanmar, plying between the
two countries for years, but there is no large-scale trade activity
between the two countries.

Last year, Myanmar and Bangladesh engaged in the naval territory
dispute which was later settled by the international tribunal of law
of sea.

Myanmar established diplomatic ties with Bangladesh since 1971 and the
current mutual trade volume is around USD 100 million.
