A hundred victims of human trafficking contact police for help

About 100 Myanmar nationals who have ended up in China, Thailand, Indonesia or Malaysia as the victims of human trafficking have contacted Myanmar Police to rescue them, Eleven Media has learned.

Most of the victims, who were sent to neighbouring countries against their will, lack education and have faced difficulties earning a living. Most of the men have been exploited on the job while most of the women have been forced into arranged marriages or into work as prostitutes, according to an official from the Department of Transnational Crime of the Myanmar Police Force.

"There are many Myanmar nationals in some countries who are facing difficulties after arriving there for various reasons," Brig-Gen Soe Myaing, head of the Department of Transnational Crime, told Eleven Media on Saturday (March 15).

"The government has been working with respective departments to take them back home. There have been about 100 people who have contacted police, via various methods, asking us to rescue them as they have been victimized by human trafficking. Our police have been working with police from the respective countries, civil social organisations, and NGOs to rescue them. Although they claim that they are Myanmar nationals, we have to first confirm whether or not they are citizens."

Soe Myaing warned Myanmar citizens who may be vulnerable to human trafficking to be aware of those who use high salaries as an incentive to recruit people to work in Muse.

"It's easy to go to China from Muse. Many Myanmar women have been sold as brides for Chinese men this way," he added.
