The celebration of International Rivers Day was held on March 14 for the first time in Tanintharyi Region, according to local residents.
More than 500 participants including local residents, members of NLD party (Dawei), members of ethnic parties and local organizations took part in the celebration which took place in Kalonehtar Village, Dawei District in the region. The village is located within a dam project site of the Dawei Special Economic Zone.
"No one in this region is allowed to make a fire to clear up a plot of land here without permission from the village administrators and officials. We also prohibited illegal ways of fishing here such as using explosives and electrifying. The whole village will be flooded if the Dawei Project built a dam here. We suffered natural disasters such as landslides here in 1994. No one can say we will not suffer that kind of disaster if they build the dam. If the dam is burst out, all nearby villages would be vanished. We all are responsible for protection of this [Kalonehtar] creek," said Kan Myint, village administrator for Talineyar village.
Though the dam project was suspended now due to the local protest, road construction under the Dawei Project polluted the creek.
"Not every rivers or creeks have a flow of water. In central part of Myanmar, there are lots of creeks which have no flow of water without rain though they flow heavily when it rains. It's because they no longer have any natural resources such as trees and water left to support them to survive," said Than Naing, an official from Tanintharyi Natural Forest Reserve Project.
The participants chose the main topic as the environmental preservation. Kalonehtar Village is a beautiful place to visit, located 16 miles away from Dawei Township.
