Myanmar President Urges Rakhine State To Join Development Efforts

YANGON, Dec 15 (Bernama) -- Myanmar President U Thein Sein on Monday called on residents in western state of Rakhine to join hands with the central government in developing the region, Xinhua news agency reported.

U said in his message on the 40th anniversary of Rakhine State Day that the situation between the two communities in the riot-hit state has remained stable.

"All races coming together to turn Myanmar into a peaceful, modern and prosperous democracy are important," he said.

"I stress for everyone to work with the government for all-round development."

Rakhine was designated as a state under the 1974 state constitution.

A sectarian riot broke out in Rakhine in June 2012 and a curfew imposed in the state was lifted on Sept 11 this year.
