The National League for Democracy's chairperson Aung San Suu Kyi said she does not want 'window dressing' talks and called for real talks while assuring that she will continue to hold on to the principle for nation reconciliation.
She made the remarks during the fourth session of the NLD's First Central Committee held in Yangon yesterday.
Suu Kyi said the NLD has been holding on the principle for national reconciliation and calling for four-way talks since last year.
"I want to discuss an actual important issue for our country. That is the issue of negotiation. Ever since the National League for Democracy was founded in 1988, I have set down negotiation as a principle because it is an important issue for Myanmar. National reconciliation can only be realised with negotiation. Only when we have achieved national reconciliation, Myanmar will become a peaceful, united, and a developed country. That is the strong principle of the NLD. That's why we have been calling for the four-way talks since 2013," said Suu Kyi.
The democracy leader said the four-way talks have been called as the party believes they would be able to negotiate openly and effectively.
"The negotiation needs to be effective at the start of the talks. We need to be able to have an open discussion. If we are not able to discuss openly and effectively, it would not be easy to meet again and hold effective discussions. If there are too many irresponsible people, views, and differences, it would be difficult to reach an understanding. That's why we have called for [the four-way talks] with a practical view. We don't want to restrict anyone. It's not because we don't want the involvement of everyone. We have called for the four-way talks because we want to have effective and practical discussions," she continued.
"When the proposal for the six-way talks was approved by everyone in the Parliament, we also supported it because the situation's not that different. Our stand for calling for the four-way talks matches with the stand for calling for the six-way talks. I can accept this. But, we don't support the steps that are being taken to prevent the talks from taking place. The important things are the genuine talks. We don't want 'window dressing' talks. That's why we will continue to hold to the principles for genuine talks and national reconciliation, which our party has set down since 1988," she added.
At the moment, the President has still not replied to the parliament regarding the proposal to hold six-way talks that has been approved by the Union Parliament.
