Myanmar will get its first freeway overpass in Yangon in January, according to the local newspaper the Voice report.

The most expected freeway overpass at Bayintnaung Junction is scheduled to be opened on January 5.

The construction was carried out by First Myanmar Investment Company, the leading infrastructural development company owned by local tycoon Serge Pun, under a contract with the government.

FMI teamed up with Thailand's PTC (Prestnessed) Company for construction of the bridge in traffic-prone Yangon.

Overpasses are parts of Yangon municipal authorities' plan to ease the city's traffic jams.

The construction started in June 2012 and takes more than a year to complete.

Both two lanes of the overpass will be opened simultaneously on January 5 as the bridge has already been commissioned into service, according to Yangon municipal authorities.
