Bangladesh cannot entertain any more Myanmar refugees: FM

Foreign Minister Dipu Moni on Thursday said Bangladesh did not have the capacity to take in any more Myanmar refugees or illegal entrances.

She made the remark at a meeting with the newly-appointed Country Representative of UNHCR Stina E Ljungdell in her office.

She also thanked the UNHCR for its continued financial and institutional support for the maintenance of two refugee camps at Kutupalong and Noyapara.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees representative presented her credentials at the meeting.

Recalling her recent visit to a Rohingya refugee camp in Cox's Bazar, Dipu Moni voiced concern over the socioeconomic environmental impacts because of the presence of a large number of Myanmar nationals.

The minister thinks a durable solution to the problem lies in their voluntary repatriation to Myanmar and establishing their rights in their own motherland.

Ljungdell thanked Bangladesh for hosting large number of international refugees from Myanmar for the last 30 years with a highly satisfactory protection regime compared to many places in the world.

She also underlined that quite after Bangladesh's good work and best practices in hosting refugees from Myanmar go unappreciated when Bangladesh should, in fact, receive commendations for maintaining peaceful refugee camps and voluntary repatriation of most of them prior to 2005.

Dipu Moni briefed the UNHCR representative about various best practices, including free education up to class VI, vocational skill training, computer training, primary and secondary healthcare introduced by the government for preparing the refugees for a productive life.

The newly-appointed country representative of the UNFPA to Bangladesh, Argentina Piccin, also presented her credentials to foreign minister.
