Chinese hospital ship providing medical services to Myanmar residents

YANGON, Myanmar, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- China's hospital ship, Ark Peace, has arrived in Myanmar as part of an overseas voyage to provide medical services to local residents, navy officials said.

The trip mark's the ship's first goodwill to Myanmar, Xinhua reported.

The ship arrived in Myanmar's Thilawa Port in Yangon Wednesday, and it will provide medical services to military personnel and residents for one week.

Medical teams will also be dispatched to local schools and communities for health checkups.

Cmdr. Shen Hao, who is leading the voyage, said the visit will promote mutual understanding and trust.

"We are looking forward to furthering pragmatic exchanges and cooperation with foreign navies, working in joint effort to build a harmonious world and a harmonious ocean and playing an active role in maintaining the world peace and tranquility," he said.

The hospital ship has 300 beds, 20 intensive care units and eight operating rooms, Xinhua reported.

The vessel is capable of accommodating 40 major surgeries per day.

Before sailing to Myanmar, Ark Peace visited Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Brunei and Maldives.
