Trade minister Toshimitsu Motegi said Thursday that he will visit Brunei and Myanmar next week to enhance ties with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and confirm the progress of negotiations for a region-wide free trade agreement.
In Brunei on Monday, Motegi will attend a ministerial gathering of countries involved in talks to forge a free trade pact called the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, which brings together the 10-member ASEAN countries, Japan, China, South Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand.
The negotiations started in May and the countries aim to conclude the talks by the end of 2015.
Motegi will also attend a series of ASEAN-related meetings of economic ministers before heading to Myanmar late Wednesday, according to the Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry.
In Myanmar, Motegi plans to meet President Thein Sein and other key government officials.
"Through this visit, I hope to deepen cooperation between Japan and ASEAN...and encourage Japanese companies to move into Myanmar and other countries," the economy, trade and industry minister said.
Motegi will return to Japan on Saturday.
ASEAN is comprised of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
