Japan's Mitsubishi-Jalux Inc. has started work upgrading the Mandalay International Airport to become air freight logistics hub, according to officials.

A team of technicians started the inspection on August 23 and 24. Another technician team came yesterday and will continue to work until September 2.

"The company started the inspection and I learned that the upgrading process will begin in three month time. But I didn't hear anything from the company or my superiors. We will submit the results to our head office and start the preparation," an official from the airport said.

In the first-round tender, Mitsubishi-Jalux submitted a master plan for airport development. The plan includes airport services and cargo-handling areas as well as anticipating future needs such as extending the airport's buildings.

Mandalay international airport was opened in September 2000. It has a 4267 metre (14,000 feet) runway that can handle big cargo aircrafts. The airport received nearly 500,000 passengers last year.
