Japan is planning to relax visa  requirements for three Southeast Asian countries, namely Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos, by the end of 2013 to boost tourism as part of its effort to promote Japan's economy, according to local media.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is expected to announce the decision at the same time when he makes final decision on the planned sales tax hike, Japan's Kyodo News quoted government officials as saying.

The plan, according to the officials, was a part of Abe's growth strategy to boost the country's sluggish economy. By easing the requirements, it aims to attract more foreign visitors.

Japan exempted short-stay tourist from Thailand and Malaysia from having to obtain a visa in July.

The officials also said that the country aims to increase the number of tourists from Asia ahead of Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games to boost tourism industry at home, said the report.
