Security talks with Myanmar likely

Myanmar is interested to hold security dialogue with Bangladesh to manage border more efficiently.

"We proposed Myanmar for security dialogues since we want to manage the border more efficiently so that smuggling, human and drug trafficking can be curbed. They showed interest in it," Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque told the Dhaka Tribune Monday.

Drugs, especially Yaba, and arms smuggled into Bangladesh have led to a slide in law and order in the country.

Bangladesh floated the idea in the seventh Foreign Office Consultation between the two countries held in Myanmar in July.

Another official of the ministry said: "We have such arrangement with Washington and New Delhi. We want the security dialogue at the additional foreign secretary level under the purview of the foreign office consultation. But it is yet to be finalised."

An inter-agency body could be formed comprising home ministry, BGB, Coast Guard, Drugs and Narcotics Department and Bangladesh Bank for the purpose, he added.
