Mandalay region government will form a committee to preserve the
region's iconic U Bein Bridge in Amarapura, 7Day reported, citing
regional government official.
The longest teak bridge in the world will be maintained by a
committee, according to Mandalay region financed and revenue minister
Dr Myint Kyu.
The bridge established in Kongoung era will be restored to its
original shape as it is the historic site of the region, according to
the minister.
"It would prohibit bicycles and motorbikes on the bridge," he said.
The minister also said adequate funding is required for the renovation
of the bridge.
Flash flood in last September destroyed parts of bridge which have
been repaired by volunteers led by a residing monk near the bridge.
The U Bein Bridge in Taungthama Lake is one of the major tourist
attraction sites in Mandalay.
Mandalay City Development Committee would also establish some
recreation centres near the bridge, according to the report.
