Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa said Tuesday that Myanmar's chairmanship of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations in 2014 will strengthen the momentum for reforms and democratization in the country, which was under military rule for decades.

Natalegawa, speaking at an annual press briefing, said he is confident that Myanmar's chairing of ASEAN this year will "further strengthen and create additional momentum to reforms and democratization."

In 2011, Southeast Asian leaders attending the ASEAN summit on the Indonesian island of Bali approved Myanmar's chairmanship of the grouping in 2014, following an intensive discussion among them.

In 2006, while it was still under military rule, Myanmar forewent its turn for the ASEAN chairmanship, which traditionally rotates annually in alphabetical order, because some other members feared it would negatively impact on ASEAN's international standing.

ASEAN comprises Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Myanmar was admitted into the regional grouping in 1997.

In 2010, Myanmar held its first election in 20 years, replacing a military government with a nominally civilian one led by former military leaders, which has since been pursuing reforms and democratization.
