Penang Immigration Detains 31 Foreigners

KEPALA BATAS, Jan 9 (Bernama) -- The Penang Immigration department detained 31 foreigners including three women in two separate raids at Kepala Batas and Permatang Pauh during a special operation early this morning.

Its chief enforcement officer Basri Othman said the five-hour operation which began at 11 pm last night was based on public information and surveillance conducted since last week.

"In the first raid at a construction site here, five Myanmar men and nine Indonesians including two women aged between 20 and 40 were detained for not possessing any travel documents, overstaying and other immigration offences," he told reporters after the operation here Thursday.

He said two of the Myanmar men were sleeping in a makeshift hut that was set up with discarded wood and plywood taken from the construction site and a piece of canvas as its roof, to avoid detection by the authorities.

In the second raid at a 'tom yam' food outlet, 17 Thais including a woman aged between 20 and 35 were detained for not having a work permit and overstaying.

"This is the third raid at the premises. It shows the obstinacy of the operator or shopowner to commit the same offence by continuing to employ foreigners without a valid work permit," he said.
