KALAYMYO—Opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi told residents in Sagaing Region yesterday not to support political parties based on personal affection but on who will most benefit the country.

The National League for Democracy chairperson flew to Kalaymyo airport yesterday morning as part of her trip to Chin State.

"We have always explained why we want public support and why we want voters to support me," said Suu Kyi.

"That's why it is more valuable for the public to support me or my party once people clearly know why they should support us. If they support us based on affection without knowing anything, this shouldn't happen, although I thank them. They need to think carefully about the country's benefit before giving their support. As we value the public's affections, we don't want to misuse them. We only want to get their support after explaining to them clearly why we want their affection and [deserve their] support."

The NLD leader was greeted by local residents from Kalaymyo, Kalewa, Mawlaik and upper Chindwin areas on the way from the airport to Shin Hone Hotel in Kalaymyo.

"This is the second time Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has visited Kalaymyo. We had to greet her with fear the first time. Now, we can greet her freely. We hope Mother Suu will become the president. In order for this to happen, we will support the amendment of Article 59 (f) in the constitution," said Ko Moe from Kalaymyo.

Suu Kyi will visit San Tike village in Chin State today and attend the opening ceremony of a school. She will then travel to Tiddim and spend the night there.
