BEIJING, June 28 (Yonhap) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping said Saturday he "will never seek hegemony no matter how strong" his country could become, amid heightened territorial tensions in Asia between China and its neighbors.
"China neither interferes in other countries' internal affairs nor imposes its will on" other countries, Xi said in his speech at a commemoration conference of the 60th anniversary of the signing on principles of peaceful coexistence with India and Myanmar.
China "will never seek hegemony no matter how strong it may become," Xi told the conference, which was attended by Myanmar President Thein Sein, Indian Vice President Hamid Ansari and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.
"China truly hopes for all other countries to pursue peaceful development," Xi said.
Backed by its growing military buildup and economic might, China has become more assertive in claiming its maritime territories over the East China Sea and the South China Sea.
In November last year, Beijing drew concerns from Washington, Seoul and Tokyo after it unilaterally declared an air defense identification zone over the East China Sea.
During his speech, Xi made no mention of neighboring countries that have been locked in bitter sea territorial disputes, but emphasized the "territorial integrity."
"No infringement upon sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries is allowed," Xi said. "It is unacceptable to have security just for one country or some countries while leaving the rest insecure."
