The family of a mechanic who worked for the Chinese-owned Yang Tse Copper Mine in central Myanmar is demanding compensation after he was killed in a work-site accident.
Myanmar Labour Union Federation has been representing Min Min Soe's family after he was killed when run over by a 100-tonne dump truck while at work on May 17.
"He was run over by the truck while talking with a supervisor in a car. He died because he could not unfasten his seat belt in time. He died at the scene. The company sent the body to hospital without informing police or his relatives about the accident," said Yan Naing Htwe from the Myanmar Labour Union Federation.
Police have filed a lawsuit against the truck driver, but so far no one has compensated the family. The union has contacted the Chinese Embassy on their behalf but there has been no response.
"If the company fails to take responsibility, we will take further action," added Yan Naing Htwe.
A Chinese citizen working for the Myanmar-Wanbao Company died accidentally while learning to dive a motorbike at the worksite. His family received Ks 80 million in compensation and the company had to apologise for the accident.
Min Min Soe had worked for the company for 10 years and had no criminal record. Reports indicate that the Myanmar Yang Tse Company has lax safety standards while its dump trucks remain too old to operate.
