The Myanmar government minister said sectarian violence in Rakhine
state will not have any impact on Kyaukphyu Special Economic Zone in
the western part of the country.
The Kyaukphyu SEZ is one of the most ambitious economic development
projects in Myanmar. It will also generate jobs and act as stimulus
for economic development of the least-developed corner of the country.
The sectarian violence broke out in the region last year, affecting
about 1.5 million people in the state.
Myanmar is developing two other special economic zones in Thilawa and Dawei.
Dr Maung Maung Thein, deputy finance minister and vice chairman of the
Kyauk Phyu SEZ bid evaluation committee, told Reuters, "The conflict
is not very huge, not a gigantic problem.
The minister invited foreign investors saying they have "the biggest
opportunity" as there is "no government to government agreement" for
the project.
The first phase of the project is expected to complete by 2016.
