A judge from Myanmar's Union Supreme Court has admitted that corruption is still deeply rooted in the country's judicial system, adding that it could also been other governmental and non-governmental organizations.
Judge Myint Aung made the statement to Thura Shwe Mann, speaker of Union Parliament and Lower House, who met with judicial organizations in Yangon on Saturday.
"The judicial sector alone is not responsible for ensuring the rule of law, and inclusive cooperation is needed. That has also been talked by the speaker. Today, there is public criticism that courts are committing bribery and corruption while they are also making incorrect and unfair judicial decisions with lack of procedures. As far as we could see, misconduct is deeply rooted not only in our department but in government organizations and outside business organizations," said Myint Aung.
The Yangon Region advocate general, Kyaw Naing Moe, said the rule of law issue was not based on the judicial sector alone, adding that cooperation was necessary among all the legislative, executive and judicial sectors.
Win Sein, secretary of Lawyers Association (Yangon) stressed the need to pass laws that the public could follow. And unfair laws could lead to problems and arguments, he added.
Also present at the meeting were the regional chief minister, regional chief justice, deputy home affairs minister and officials.
