Myanmar to power 20,000 villages in coming two years

Myanmar's Ministry of Livestock, Fisheries and Rural Development says it will work to provide electricity to 20,000 villages across the country within two years, according to the deputy minister.

The deputy minister Khin Maung Aye made the point at a meeting with local organizations in Yangon on October 10.

"We [the ministry] are now working to build infrastructure such as roads, electricity, water and rural housing in the rural areas across the country. We have a target to provide electricity to 20,000 villages in the country in 2015-2016. 10,000 villages will get electricity in the period from 2014 to 2015. The next period from 2015 to 2016 will get more 10,000 villages power. It's a really big project. Every regions and states in the country will be involved. The ministry is working on the project," he said.

The government has allocated over 75 billion kyats for rural development for the fiscal year 2013-14.

The ministry will work as a focal ministry for rural development projects currently under way and coming in the future, cooperating with other ministries, NGOs, INGOs and donor organizations.

If those villages are located near the national power grid, they will be powered by the grid, and if not, they will be powered by other means such hydro-power, solar system, bio gas, and bio mass.
